"For a man to conquer himself is the first and noblest of all victories. ”
– Plato
What is Spotterup: We believe that life is comprehensible and has a purpose for each of us. The philosopher Plato believed that developing men in service to the city was a noble thing. “So long as the young generation is, and continues to be, well brought up, our ship of state will have a fair voyage; otherwise the consequences are better left unspoken.” —Plato, Law

We do believe that “I will find a way or I will make one” follows a warrior’s mindset. This is not to be interpreted as being selfish. The ends don’t justify the means.

The pursuit of excellence and a competitive attitude should never stop. In the end, the answer for ‘Finding a Way or Making a Way” is not always found outside of the walls of our strongest defenses. Knowing how to live, to survive, and to find perfection are all concepts and ideas that are found within ourselves. Survive can be defined as: continuing to live after the cessation of something. Survivalist can be defined as: a person who advocates finding ways to survive, especially when anarchy occurs or society breaks down. It’s just plain smart to find ways to survive a tornado or a hurricane. And it’s paramount to try to outlast a society that has decided to give up on living by rules. There are some very bad people out there. We accept that living with concern in a world of danger is a prudent thing to do.

But, we propose that life has a purpose and a plan and therefore we choose to live it without living in fear. We propose to live life on our terms and not by the terms that others dictate for us. We choose to live well. We choose to seek out the highest perfection, this is Arete, this is the highest purpose that is greater than working vainly on ourselves.

Lastly, Spotter Up Tactical proposes we teach people how to become survivors, because we want to share with others not only how to survive in this life, but how to live with glory in the hereafter

About Hannibal

Hannibal Barca (Punic language: Between 183 and 181 BC), was a Carthaginian general, considered one of the greatest military commanders in history. His father Hamilcar Barca was the leading Carthaginian commander during the First Punic War. His younger brothers were Mago and Hasdrubal, and he was brother-in-law to Hasdrubal the Fair.

Hannibal lived during a period of great tension in the Mediterranean Basin, when the Roman Republic established its supremacy over other great powers such as ancient Carthage and the Greek kingdoms of Macedonia, Syracuse, and the Seleucid Empire. One of his most famous achievements was at the outbreak of the Second Punic War, when he marched an army which included war elephants from Iberia over the Pyrenees and the Alps into Italy. In his first few years in Italy, he won three dramatic victories—the Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae, in which he distinguished himself for his ability to determine his and his opponent’s strengths and weaknesses, and to play the battle to his strengths and the enemy’s weaknesses—and won over many allies of Rome.

Hannibal is often regarded as one of the greatest military strategists in history and one of the greatest generals of Mediterranean antiquity, together with Philip of Macedon, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Scipio Africanus. Plutarch states that Hannibal was questioned by Scipio as to who was the greatest general, and Hannibal replied either Alexander or Pyrrhus, then himself, or, according to another version of the event, Pyrrhus, Scipio, then himself.  Military historian Theodore Ayrault Dodge called Hannibal the “father of strategy”,  because his greatest enemy, Rome, came to adopt elements of his military tactics in its own strategic arsenal. This praise has earned him a strong reputation in the modern world, and he was regarded as a great strategist by Napoleon and others.

Aut inveniam viam aut faciam” (or “Aut viam inveniam aut faciam”) is Latin for “I shall either find a way or make one.”  The phrase has been attributed to Hannibal; when his generals told him it was impossible to cross the Alps by elephant, this was supposedly his response.

About the Logo and Heraldic Shield

A spotter is trained to look for things. In our Spotter Up logo, our Spotter is the omniscient strategist who looks at problems through a lens of opportunity. He sits atop his tower and holds command over the 360 degrees around him, as represented by the eight arrows, (six in view) in our black and white circular logo. From his line of sight, he can see around, above, below and beyond a problem. He isn’t stuck using the same movements, as a rook chess piece would do, because he breaks the rules when the rules plainly don’t make sense. He capably navigates himself around threats, and can go anywhere.

A Spotter is the known as the  consummate Chessman. He identifies issues, gathers information on the threats, devises a plan, and executes it successfully. In heraldry, the skull represents victory of life over death, and our spotter tower is a fortress that is a testament to his ability. Sometimes success is achieved by looking inside rather than beyond, and it is gained by listening to what you ‘know’. He is the sentinel that watches over others, himself, and learns in order that he can point the way out of danger.

Below, our heraldic shield illustration goes into greater detail about the Spotter Up Shield logo.
